Indigenous Music Genres in LATAM - Refinery29
Indigenous communities in Latin America and the Caribbean have been making music for thousands of years, using instruments made from materials like animal bones, conch shells, bamboo, and wood to create melodies and rhythms used for both celebration and mourning. Today, there are dozens of Indigenous music styles dating back thousands of years, each with its own narration of social, cultural, economic, and religious life that have given root to much of the modern music we listen to today. Native music has also fused with modern sounds to create various subgenres, including Inca trap, huayno blues, Embera hip-hop, pop Andino, cumbia Andina, and so many more. When we listen to Indigenous music, we acknowledge and empower the people who belong to the land.
